More about the author Out of curiosity I also tried to turn off the system property xmpp.pubsub.multiple-subscriptions in the Openfire admin console to see if I could stop Openfire from requiring the subscription id. The posts appear on the web front end just fine. So when the room gets created, the user gets automatically invited and then we receive a bad-request error from the server (OpenFire 3.7.1).
