Anyway, suppose I use something like what you describe, how do I force a browser redirection once I detect that the HTTP code is 3xx? The browser should be doing the same with a 307, meaning jQuery doesn't even know it's a redirect. When the user is not authenticated, the server will automatically send a 302 redirect to a Login action and return a Login page. But there I figured out that the framework we use (CakePHP) was doing the redirect not with the Location header field but somehow internally.
For some (unclear for me ;)) reasons it may cause same origin policy issues. and other important thing is that there is no need to modify code on server side nor client side. I don't know about 307 but you can force 302-redirects via http://httpbin.org/. Like already mentioned 401 Unauthorized could be a good idea.
